Welcome to a Secret Subject Swap. This week 10 brave bloggers picked a secret subject for someone else and were assigned a secret subject to interpret in their own style. Today we are all simultaneously divulging our topics and submitting our posts.
My subject is “At what point do you say goodbye when you know your pet is suffering and may never get better?”
It was submitted by: http://batteredhope.blogspot.com
This one is a super hard post for several reasons…
- Who wants to talk about dying pets? That’s depressing as hell!
- I don’t have any pets.
and 3. this is a kind of “asked and answered” question. The point I would have to say goodbye is if my pet was in pain and suffering.
I had a dog many years ago and I loved him dearly. His name was Jack and he was, as is a dog’s job, my very best friend. He loved to go on canoe rides. He’d ride right at the front of the boat like the family mascot that he was.
He was struck by a truck in 2010. My whole family, even friends, and neighbors were devasted when he was killed. He was that kind of dog. I don’t really know what kind of dog he was and really never cared. He was in a shopping cart in Walmart with a sign that said, “FREE“. Never being a pet-person I was prepared to walk right past the cart with puppies crawling everywhere and a man looking mighty unhappy to be sitting in the cold January wind.
That was until I saw those eyes. My feet literally stopped in the tracks. Only him, any of the others I could have passed right by, but there was something about him that was calling to my soul. I did walk right passed, though, and on into the store. I couldn’t get him out of my mind.
Somewhere in the potato chip aisle, okay I made that up but figured knowing me that was where I was at when it hit me. I said, “I’m going back for him.” “Who?” my husband asked. “That puppy!” He couldn’t believe it because I’ve always been scared of dogs.
After I paid for my groceries I was headed for the door to get that puppy and take him home with us. I walked out of the store and they were GONE! I was distraught I didn’t have my new best friend. I thought maybe it was for the best even though my heart was broken.
We loaded the groceries and headed home. I was staring out the window kicking myself for not getting him immediately when I saw the man at the gas station paying for his gas. “Stop the car!” I screamed at my husband. Long story short he became my best friend and the best birthday present EVER!
I don’t like ending on a sad note so enjoy these cute puppy pictures and go read my friends’ posts!
