It’s here…or just about here anyway and if you don’t have an SSL certificate yet there is no better time! Mostly because if you wait any longer your site will be announcing to the world that your site is no longer secure and if you run an eCommerce site that could cost you customers and dollars for every day that you don’t have it.
If you’ve been dragging your feet you need to rectify the situation immediately. The first thing you need to do is to check with your web host because now that it’s become a “thing” a lot of hosting platforms are offering them for free. You still have to fill out a form, install the plugin, and change your analytics account, but if you’re counting your pennies this may be a great thing for you.
Now, remember they are FREE so they aren’t going to be as strong as some of the stronger ones, but most people don’t need an SSL that resembles Fort Knox. These free SSL’s also have to be renewed every 60 to 90 days but are still free. Most have an auto-renew option, but per a conversation, I had last week the notices can still get sent because let’s face it, it is, you guessed it, free!
Now, I have used the paid for and the free and haven’t had any issues with either. People want to see that you are at least making the effort to protect their information and not burying your head in the sand. You might remember I started shouting about this way back before it became a thing. I wrote “You’re Running Out Of Time To Get That SSL” way back in Jan of 2017 and “The Low Down On The SSL Certificate,” I wrote in Aug of the same year.
Here it is July of 2018 and we’re STILL talking about them! I won’t say this is my last post about it because I’ve learned to NEVER say never! I just hope that no one wakes up one day soon with a big “NOT SECURE” in your browser and if you do…I promise not to say, “I told you so!”.
Also, if you just don’t want to deal with it I will take care of it for you for $49.99
