Hyperlinking plain text is when you link a word or group of words to another piece of content within the same post or page of your WordPress website.
This could be used as in a Table of Contents, reports, or even sales pages. There are lots of ways in which you can hyperlink words to take you somewhere else in the document. Most hyperlinks are used going from one web page to another, but the kind I’m talking about is a link that stays within the same document and is not a web address.
To hyperlink content like this, you have to be in your text editor. If you don’t know, it is above the toolbar on the right. There are two tabs that say Visual & Text. Click on the text tab and this will take you to the text editor.
I’m going to use the image above as another example.
Say I wanted the word WordPress to take me back to the top of the page. In the text editor you would type:
<a href =”#unique-identifier”>WordPress</a>
You would add a hashtag and the unique-identifer is a word or group of words that are used to identify the link and where it is going on the page. In this case, I’m going to make the unique-identifier the word WordPress. I hope that doesn’t confuse you.
It will now look like this in the text editor version:
<a href =”#WordPress”>WordPress</a>
The next step is to find out where you want your link to go. For example, the title of a chapter in the table of contents could be linked to go to the exact page that the chapter actually starts. Again, this will only work in your text editor, but once you save it the link becomes active.
Now that you’ve found the content that you are wanting to link to you will have to add a bit of code to that too.
It’s going to look like this:.
<p id=”same unique-identifier”>The content you want to link to”</p>
So if I wanted this word “HYPERLINK” to take you back to the first paragraph of this piece it would look like this:
Pretty neat trick huh! Now you can add links just about anywhere!
