Welcome to a Secret Subject Swap. This week 10 brave bloggers picked a secret subject for someone else and were assigned a secret subject to interpret in their own style. Today we are all simultaneously divulging our topics and submitting our posts.
Your “Secret Subject” is:
Tell us a story about two young teens who steal a car and go on a road trip.

The wet parking lot took on an ethereal glow under the lights. It’s smooth black surface shining like onyx. The two girls, lifelong best friends, shivered under the trees that grew on the outskirts of the mall. “Are you sure we should do this?” Lexie asked Sarah. “Of course, I’m not sure but, what else are we gonna do? You can’t steal from the worst man in town and then just hang around to see what he thinks about it.”
Lexie didn’t say another word as they looked across the lot at their choices. A black SUV, a blue minivan, and a white Oldsmobile. “We can’t take the SUV because it probably has GPS, the minivan could be the same way, so I guess our only choice is the white one. Okay, we run on three. One…two…three go!” The girls ran as fast as they could while trying not to slide across the wet pavement.
The first thing Sarah did was run her hands around the car at the bottom looking for a magnet holding a spare key. “Should have known we wouldn’t get that lucky!” She said changing directions to try the driver’s side door. “Bingo! we’re in. Of course, that was the easy part. I’ve only seen this done on TV so cross your fingers that I can get this thing hot-wired.” “Fingers crossed,” said Lexie as she slid into the passenger seat.
Sarah popped the steering column and started pulling wires out. Lexie jumped as Sarah flicked the lighter to melt the plastic coating so she could twist the wires together. The car started up immediately and they both jumped and letting out giggles that showed how nervous they both were. They hadn’t planned on going on a crime spree, but the money had been right there. Right there in front of them when they had needed it most.
Lexie’s father had been passed out on the couch. He had gone too far this time hitting her so hard it had busted her lip and probably broken her nose. Sarah had seen the money first, lying there on the coffee table as if it were begging her to grab it. Sarah had looked at Lexie sitting at the table, her eyes glassy, as she held a bag of frozen peas to her face and made a split-second decision.
She grabbed the money then Lexie’s hand and pulled her through the front door of the mobile home that Lexie had called “home” since the day she’d been born. “What are you doing? He’ll kill us for sure!” Lexie screamed as they ran down the street holding hands. “He’ll have to find us first,” Sarah said out of breath from running so hard. They cut through some backyards to get to the mall parking lot as the dogs in the neighborhood barked their unhappiness.
Sarah pulled out of the parking lot the back end of the giant Oldsmobile fishtailing on the wet road. “Don’t get us pulled over Sarah!” “I know, I know! Must be bald tires, gotta be more careful.” “Which way should we head? Mexico?” said Lexie. “I don’t think we have to go that far to get away from Earl Lee. How about Florida? It’s warm and sunny. I bet we could find jobs and we’d never have to see him or snow ever again!”
“Florida! Sounds good to me. Maybe we could get jobs at Disneyworld…or is it Disneyland? I can never remember.” “Disneyworld…land is in California. I don’t know about that. They’ll want driver’s licenses and social security cards and we don’t have either. I was thinking some mom and pop place that could pay us cash. Besides,” she said patting her jacket pocket, “we’re good for now.” They hit the highway and headed South.
